There is 281 predominantly # 8 Santa Cows and at least 93 calves in the paddock. Vendors would like to sell 12 decks or about 254 cows and all the calves. There were 53 calves branded as of the 7th April so they are now from 3 -7 month old and some of them could be weaned now. At inspection on 1st July I counted 40 unbranded calves from 3 months down to new born and calves would be getting dropped every day. Very good quality Gyranda and Forest Park bulls have been used in a continually joined mating program and these bulls have always been vaccinated for Vibrio.

The cows are mostly young #8s that are only on their second calf so have their whole breeding life in front of them.  On inspection I did see some other age brands including, 2 x young #9’s, 3 x #7’s, 2 x #6’s and 3 x #5’s and a #1. As I never saw all the cows and vendors want all wet cows to go, they are prepared to give a reduction in price of  $100/head if cows are #4’s, #3’s, #2’s or #1’s and $250 reduction if cows are older than 10 years (ie old #9 or older).

The cows are either very well dehorned or polled and I only saw  one cow with horns and very little regrowth in any others. The cows were all vaccinated against botulism with Singvac 3 year in March 2020 so still have 20 months coverage. They have all been well handled and their temperament seemed to be very good in the paddock. Even though they have no tick on them the cows are from a ticky area and will need to be cleared if going to tick free area. Vendors are prepared to clear on farm at their cost.

Manfred Downs has been breeding Santa Gertrudis cattle for over 30 years, using top sires from Gyranda, Forest Park and Swan Hill, so cows  are mostly purebred Santa cows however as photos show there are some cows that are obviously showing some brahman characteristics as vendors did have red brahman bulls in the herd in the last 10 years. These young cows look to range in weight from 330 kg for the lighter conditioned wet cow with big weaner to 500 kg + for fat dry cows. There was 65 weaners removed from cows on the 7th April so would be the lighter conditioned dry cows in the mob.  Most of these cows would only be medium framed but as they are only young and would have reared a calf, I would expect them all to grow into large framed very good quality mature cows.
